We, the undersigned student groups, faculty members, and campus leaders support socially-responsible business conducted at the University of Maryland.
The University of Maryland Campus Dining Services hosts Taco Bell in two locations on campus. It has come to our attention that Taco Bell directly profits from farmworkers’ poverty wages and substandard working conditions in Immokalee, Florida. Taco Bell pays extremely low prices for the tomatoes which it purchases. Taco Bell and its parent company Yum! Foods actually have a hand in keeping those prices so low and therefore bear a significant degree of responsibility for the inhumane working conditions of the men and women who pick their tomatoes. In addition the farm workers have no right to organize, no right to overtime pay, and absolutely no benefits. As one of the largest purchasers of tomatoes from Immokalee, ?Florida Taco Bell bares responsibility for these conditions.
These grievances have been brought to the attention of Yum! Foods in the past several years, however nothing has been changed to improve conditions for workers in the Immokalee fields. We believe the University has a responsibility to stand up for human rights.
Already Taco Bell has been removed from dozens of campuses including UCLA, Duke, University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan among many others. By standing up for workers' rights, the University of Maryland can show its commitment to excellence not only in academics, but also in human rights and worker relations. We expect the University will remain on the cutting edge by terminating the present contract with Taco Bell and promoting civic engagement and social responsibility.
