pus Labor Update - December 2003
This semester more workers participated in actions to win a first contract then ever before. Layoffs have been stopped but people are still out of work. We built increased solidarity with the DC labor community, clergy and politcal allies.
The pace of contract negotiations has picked up some- but we have not reached agreement on any of the major issues. A lving wage and fair pay are still not agreed to.
The fight for justice for the housekeepers on campus was another major focus. Many housekeepers have filed a group grievance about issues of discrimination and harrasment.
Sadly, some of those who have been spoken out are being targeted and are facing additional job duties and have been written up. We are very concerned about this development and this will be an area where student solidarity would be helpful.
We see this disrespect for basic human and constitutional rights as part of the overall anti-worker position of this university administration.
If the treatment of workers at the bargaining table improved- and a contract was achieved, workers would gain more power to fight harassment and mistreatment.
Next semester we plan to increase the pressure on the state to fund higher education and fair pay for staff. Specifically we will organize another major demonstration in Annapolis. Any help in planning this event would be great.
Another way that SAWU could help next semester-
Educate and organize other students about workers issues on campus. An outreach program like the one that has been done about the WRC would be a good step in building student support for workers on campus.
