What is the Choice Program?

The Choice Program is an intensive, community-based monitoring and advocacy program, which works to guide and empower youth that have been identified as at risk for falling into the patterns of delinquency, drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, truancy, institutionalization, or placement in foster care. The mission of The Choice Program is to provide a comprehensive array of services which are designed to stabilize behavior, increase independence and self-sufficiency and prevent out out-of-home placements. These services are delivered through intensive, family-centered, community based interventions that encourage positive growth and empower the youth and the family.

Program Summary

• Teens and children, ages 8-18, are referred to The Choice Program by the Department of Juvenile Justice, The Department of Social Services and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
• College students are matched one-on-one with the Choice Clients for academics (homework), life skills and mentoring.
• Although materials are available, tutors are expected to be creative, patient and flexible in both planning and implementing lessons with their “tutee”. Preparation for each evening’s session is expected.
• Choice Staff and a student coordinator are on site each night to help facilitate scheduled activities.
• The atmosphere is casual, with few rules and regulations, while still providing important and much needed structure and consistency.
• There are no grades, no failures, no report cards; we aim for success, big or small.
