WHAT IS MAY DAY?
May Day is the centuries old international holiday for workers. Born in the struggle for an 8 hour workday, May first is the day when people everywhere celebrate the history of the labor movement and battle for fair wages and fair working conditions. This May Day students and campus staff will celebrate together in College Park to fight for a fair first contract for the staffs new union AFSCME.
WAIT, WHAT'S GOING ON?
For the last two years campus employees have not received their guaranteed cost of living raises, meaning that effectively their wages were cut. During the same time President Mote's salary increased a generous $108,000. Giving the workers a fair raise would cost just $7 million, less than 1% of the University's more than one billion dollar operating budget. While budget cuts have hurt the University, less than one third of the school's money comes from state funds. In truth, we have hundreds of millions of dollars that could be used to give hardworking staff the wages they deserve. Its a question of priorities; we can have needless hundred million dollar sports arenas, advertising campaigns that get us zooming or a campus that treats its workers fairly. It is up to us to decide how OUR money gets spent.
WON'T RAISES FOR STAFF JUST MEAN MORE TUITION HIKES?
No! The Diamondback claims that "students carry workers on their backs," but the opposite is true; the 3,000 staff members that work for the University of Maryland are the most undervalued members of the campus community. Without them, there is no University. They clean the dorms and classrooms, maintain the grounds, shovel snow when the rest of the University is off, and work in every office on campus. AFSCME and the campus employees stand against tuition hikes that make it harder for working people to attend the University. Students and workers must stand together to promote a thriving and just University.
We will be converging at 4:00 PM on Hornbake Mall for a barbeque and picnic. It will be a great chance to meet the staff and promote solidarity between students and workers. Hear music and speakers, learn about the history of May Day and the experiences of campus workers in College Park, and celebrate the people who make this University work!
