tory professor Arthur Eckstein and instructor Jeanne Rutenburg wrote in the Diamondback that University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill called for “more … attacks” against American civilians like those on September 11th 2001. This is simply untrue, and the professors offer no evidence for the claim. Presumably they base their opinion on the much-cited piece "Some People Push Back," but no passage of that article substantiates Eckstein and Rutenburg's claim. In fact, when Churchill was asked on the Democracy Now radio show if he thought such civilian infrastructure should be ever be targetted, he said "absolutely not."
Indeed this is just one of many distortions that have arisen in the nationwide campaign against Churchill that has in fact cut his freedom of speech on several occasions. He has been pressured to resign as chair of his department and has had numerous speaking engagements canceled because of threats of violence. These distortions seem to arise from the fact that many are relying on attack media like FOX news, the Free Republic and Front Page Magazine as the primary source for what they know about Churchill. Unfortunately, the role of these sources is to push an agenda, and objective analysis of the news is lost.
I became involved in this controversy two weeks ago when Morgan Hubbard published his first column attacking Ward Churchill complete with rhetorical threats of violence. Hubbard was sloppy in publishing the source of small quotes he was pulling from Churchill’s work, and I noticed that Hubbard had reproduced the ideas and exact choice of quotes of another columnist with a simple google search of a "fixed policy objective of the Nazis." I detailed this in a letter to the Diamondback, put my letter online at UMCP.ORG and solicited feedback from journalism students, English students and professors that I spoke with. While the column by Rutenburg and Eckstein claims that Hubbard has not been able to respond, he has already posted three times in the "feedback welcome here" link. Despite Hubbard's demand that I remove the page and threats of a libel suit to shut it down, English professors and law students assure that he has no case, and that piece is still available at

Hubbard’s pieces contain many other misrepresentations. For example, Sherman has already pointed out that Hubbard was speaking from ignorance when he said Churchill "has no… academic record" by describing the pieces that are studied around the country. These pieces are not studied because Churchill is “a radical” as Hubbard states. Rather some of his academic work, such as research of the Counter Intelligence Programs or COINTELPROS of the FBI and Bureau of Indian Affairs’ on the Black Panthers and American Indian Movement, are the most well-documented and respected scholarly works on the subject.
Hubbard also claims that the “American Indian Movement… has denounced ?Churchill as a fake.” Hubbard’s audience may then be surprised to find out that many AIM members, chapters and founders are backing him strongly as evidenced by this petition put out by AIM Colorado (http://coloradoaim.org/wardpetition.htm). When Hubbard said “fake” he was referring to Churchill’s claim of being "1/16" Creek and Cherokee. Hubbard is a little off, as Churchill actually claims to be 3/16 Native American, which Colorado AIM says has been upheld by Keetoowah Geneologists. Hubbard may be calling Churchill a "fake" because the Keetoowah band does not recognize Churchill as part of their tribe, but rather an associate member, because he is not 1/4 Indian.
However, one wonders how many members of the Black Student Union are not “black enough" by this definition of race.
Hubbard even misidentified the institution Churchill was associated with, saying the professor worked at Colorado State while he actually works at University of Colorado at Boulder.
The fact is much of what Churchill said in his much-cited piece in this controversy “Some People Push Back” was rather arrogant, and as such was in poor taste and in an inappropriate tone. But this attack campaign has gone beyond such legitimate criticisms. Commentators have attacked his identity, his scholarship, his artwork, and many in the attack campaign have even threatened his safety. Through distortion and misrepresentation many writers attempt to draw anyone who questions their line of argument as a radical “anti-American.” Churchill himself has clarified his point much since the piece. He says his argument is that, under the logic of militarism, which he does not share, the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon were just as legitimate targets as civilian infrastructure in Iraq like water treatment plants.
Emma Perez, the head of ethnic studies at University of Colorado points out that this is a part of a larger attack on programs like ethnic studies and on the freedom of opinion in academia that has been pushed in the past by groups like Campus Watch (http://www.counterpunch.org/perez02282005.html). Indeed, if Hubbard had said “un-American” instead of “anti-American” and had chosen his other favorite target, the movie industry, his piece would read like the opening scenes of a dramatic reenactment of McCarthyism.
But I am not attacking anyone’s free speech, nor am I arguing that anyone should believe me just because I say so. Rather, trace my sources, as I have traced Hubbard’s and check out WikiPedia's summary on the well-researched online encyclopedia. I am all for freedom of speech, but also good journalism and scholarship, which I think is needed for a serious debate.
But let us settle this once and for all. I challenge Hubbard to a lyrical battle between me and my choice of up to 3 MCs and him and his choice of up to 3 MCs at the next Juke Joint or at his soonest convenience.
