ME Campus Worker Update (10/16/03)
While the University Administration continues to lay off hardworking staff on campus and recommending more tuition increases for students they are proposing more huge raises for themselves. In the latest plan approved by the Board of Regents Finance Committee last week, President Mote who currently earns $358,000 a year would receive a raise of $10,000. In fact if the Regents win, all of the administrators will be getting fat raises next year.
This is outrageous.
The average housekeeper will get a raise of only $500 for the year, or about $10 a week before taxes. We are mobilizing to oppose these bad priorities.
The Rally on October 22nd is gaining momentum. Today, 33 housekeepers attended a planning meeting for the rally. This is the largest planning meeting for a rally we have ever had.
The NAACP, Casa De Maryland, and members of the labor community are coming in solidarity on Wednesday the 22nd.
If SAWU would like to speak or take a paticular action, please let us know so we can plan it in. Due to bad reviews of our last theatre performance we are likely skipping the drama this time. However we may have baloons.
We have been approached and been talking with Progressive Maryland and SGA President Tim Daly about working together to fight for more funding for higher education. Naturally workers on campus see the need for more funding for higher education and have been involved in this crucial fight, but we want some accountability from the University Administration and the Board of Regents.
As a union of workers, it is difficult to be focused on the fight for more funding for higher education, when the current money is used for bloated administrative salaries, luxury buses. Due to Uinversity Administration, workers are being paid poverty wages and still being laid off and tuition continues to sky rocket.
