Women in Black is a network of activists world-wide who stand in silent vigil against war. Women in Black vigils were started in Israel in 1988 by women protesting against Israel's Occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. Women in Black has developed in the United States, England, Italy, Spain, Azerbaijan and in FR Yugoslavia, where women in Belgrade have stood in weekly vigils since 1991 to protest war and the Serbian regime's policies of nationalist aggression. Last semester, Women in Black stood in silent vigil in front of the Union every Friday from 12:00-1:00 against the Israeli military occupation of the Palestinian community, against attacks on civilians, and for peace and coexistence between both peoples. This semester there isn't a Women in Black, but some people are interested in starting it up again.
