view is the process of review by qualified outsiders known as "peers," (experts in the same field) who identify manuscripts, research, proposals, grants and other work(s) that are worthy of publication. In the peer review process, authors submit their work to scholarly academic journals, who in turn, send manuscripts to an editorial board or similar group of peers (usually anonymous to the authors) to determine the article's acceptability, validity, reproducibility of results, grammar and scholarly use of theory. Authors may then be asked to edit or revise before their work is accepted for publication.
This procedure distinguishes scientific publication from ordinary popular publication. When it functions correctly, it serves to filter out any claims that are obviously false, whereas the editorial process in other media often allows such falsehoods to pass, whether because editors are simply negligent, because the falsehoods are commercially lucrative or because publishers are willfully contradicting the scientific community's views.
Understanding the distinction between peer-reviewed scientific publications and others is critical to evaluating claims about nature. Think-tank reports or articles in the science section of the New York Times, for example, are not equivalent to articles in Geophysical Review Letters. Public statements by people with "Doctor" in front of their names are not as carefully vetted as what they actually publish in journals.
