University of Maryland students met on the mall of their college park campus yesterday, November 20th, to voice their opposition to the war machine. Armed with buckets, PVC pipe, banners and signs the group layed down drum beats interlaced with chants like ¨no blood for oil¨ or ¨no war in Iraq.¨ While the numbers were not large, the crowd was spirited and could be heard from the library to the administration building. Some students even came up to say that they could hear the drummers from inside their classroom. Overall the protest had really positive energy and the participants came away energized. However, some felt that turnout could have been larger.
The action was planned to coincide with the Not in our Name day of action which proved a great success as a walk-out in New York City. This action, however, was not planned as a walk-out after a lot of discussion about what tactics to employ. The problem of advertising and energizing the whole campus seemed daunting, especially with the possibility of police response if the ddpartment had prior warning of an action. Graduate student Kobi Snitz offered ¨this is a great blueprint for an action when Bush starts full-scale invasion or bombing of Iraq.¨ Perhaps then the campus would be angry enough to walk-out in mass numbers and make the administration and other students realize the extent of anti-war opposition. At least one professor has already committed to a solidarity walk-out if there is a large student walk-out.
The anti-authoritarian president of the organizing group Peace Forum SImon Fitzgerald expressed his pleasure with the activity. ¨There could be more people here, and that would change the nature of the protest in an exciting way, but everyone who came out had a good time. As long as we can convince people that agree with peace and justice that resistence is not only necessary but fun, I think we'll be unstoppable.¨
The only question is, how can Peace Forum invigorate all of the anti-war students on campus to come out for a ¨big one¨ type protest, march, block route one, something that won't be forgotten. In addition, if Peace Forum does want to come out the day the ¨shit hits the fan¨ how can it get the message out to everyone, Phone Trees are needed as well as fliers, energy, visibility and forwarning
