Petition
The creators of this petition want to make clear to the University of Maryland College Park and all related authorities that we are proud to be part of this institution and wish to continue to carry out our work here effectively.
In this spirit, we want to state what amount to clear labor violations are committed by supervisors toward staff of Residential Facilities, in particular toward the housekeepers. These supervisors create a hostile work environment and negatively affect our ability to perform our jobs.
The following are problems that have already come to our attention and been confirmed: The mistreatment by supervisors Blanca Chavez and Michael Davis in the Comcast building (zone 9), by Bessy Smith in the Services Building #213 (zone 4), and in the Space and Computer Sciences Building (zone 10)
The supervisors have mistreated the staff in the following ways:
a) Speaking disrespectfully to staff by yelling or talking in an aggressive or violent manner.
b) Harassing workers on the job by following them around and vigilantly controlling the tasks of the housekeepers. This excessive control often hinders staff's ability to carry out the duties of their jobs freely and effectively .
c) Making unsubstantiated accusations against staff working in the Comcast Building.
d) Holding up staff by telling them what should be done and what should not be done for every task even though staff members know their duties well offhand.
e) Preferentially assigning unequal workloads to different staff members of the same position.
f) Generally implementing dictatorial and authoritarian methods to direct staff and assign tasks to different workers.
We want to make clear that we have undertaken this petition because we have not found any response from the appropriate authorities, be they supervisors or representatives from Human Resources, nor have any appropriate measures been undertaken to find a solution to these problems. Nevertheless, we recognize the effort of these authorities to address the problem through meetings of personnel. However, there exists no impartiality or adequately designed process to address these persistent problems.
We believe that these problems can be overcome but they require, first of all, good will and understanding of the problem by both sides of the conflict (in other words by staff and supervisors), and the application of an appropriate managerial methods. For our part, We (who sign below) reaffirm our agreement to contribute in whatever appropriate manner to address and solve this issue.
Finally, for the well-being of the institution, its related authorities and personnel, we hope that this initiative be heard and addressed effectively.
