is Matthew William Johnson. I hail from Millersville, Maryland. I was present at the counter-inaugural protest along with my friends from the International Socialist Organization’s D.C. and University of Maryland chapters. It was my first protest. If it were a perfect world, it would undoubtedly be my last. I write this as both a memoir and a pronouncement.
When we were all gathered at the end of the march, blocked off by a phalanx of police, I encountered a bystander on the sidewalk. He called us all “nuts” for “protesting for the sake of protesting” after the election had already been decided. He thoughtfully pointed out that the people had voted. Notwithstanding the Ohio fiasco and other similar flaws in our precious democracy that kept voters from the polls and disrupted the voting machines, I had to admit that yes, the people did vote – and a lot of them voted for Bush. While my heart can hardly bear this truth, I accept it, but I do not and will never accept this president. Not only is he intellectually unqualified for the position, he has never lived in this world as we all know it. Throughout his life he has coasted along, failing in business, engaging in reckless, youthful behavior, strutting around Texas knowing that Dad would always protect him and compensate all of his shortcomings, etc. I am not saying it is wrong to be well-off, but I hardly think a provincial-minded, painfully average C-student is good enough to run the greatest nation in the world.
That having been said, let’s talk about what he’s done wrong since he has been president.
He has lied to the American people. He has brought us into a war causing more civilian deaths than the lives claimed on September 11th by the hijackers. He has sent our friends and family members to their deaths for a cause based on lies. He has used the American people’s fear as a manipulative weapon against them. He has threatened to destroy what our forefathers constructed by implementing the USA Patriot Act.
The list goes on.
Of all the atrocities the most zealous leftist can attribute to Bush, I think the worst by far is his ongoing attempt to hide behind a false mask of righteousness. This man claims to be ordained by God! Maybe if he would put The Complete Idiot’s Guide to World Domination down for a second and pick up the Bible, he would quickly notice in the book of Exodus that “Thou shalt not kill.” Seriously though, the man needs to wake up and smell the blood – not the oil. America is a nation no “righteouser” than any other, and many of its politicians seem to believe that we have the right to take what we want when we want it and at whatever price. How about thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s oil? And as far as “bearing false witness against thy neighbor,” Saddam Hussein would be brought to tears (if he were a Christian) over Bush’s ludicrously unsupported-by-evidence accusation that “Saddam has ties to Al-Qaeda.” This is not to mention Saddam’s phantom weapons of mass destruction. What about “Thou shalt not steal?” Well, George W. Bush stole an election (maybe two!), so I won’t even have to mention his stealing of our civil rights after September 11th or his “privatizing” of our social security. I will concede that Bush Jr. does honor his father, but this serves yet again as part of the problem.
He may not have committed adultery, but God forbid, if he did, he would be strung from the flagpole before you could say “I did not have sex with that woman!” In summary, Bush has broken at least four of the Ten Commandments – that’s 40 percent – or roughly around the percentage of eligible voters who voted in the past election if you include the absence of potential votes lost due to improper handling and substandard voting machines (this is a satirical estimate).
I say to fellow Christians and bystanders to the fight against Bush, it should never be deemed a crime to criticize and dissent. Jesus was the master of critical wit – calling the Pharisees hypocrites for inviting only their wealthy friends to elegant balls while the poor froze to death outside (sound familiar?). While Bush is not quite learned enough to be a full-fledged Pharisee, I think Jesus would be all over him like white on rice if he were presently on this earth.
This is barely more than a long and windy message to all you Christians out there who will no longer stand for Bush and his corruption. Now is the time to take a stand for love, peace, and equality for all under God! Let us not burn flags and chant profanities – these trivial actions only exacerbate the problem. It takes more than trivialities to change the world. Let us change it with our hearts and with our minds: nothing is beyond us if we have God on our side!
