Care is A Right!
At a Washington D.C. rally in front of Safeway called by the 
United Food & Commercial Workers Union, striking grocery workers from Southern California and West Virginia expressed what was the core issue in their difficult decision to go on strike and risk their livelihood.
A woman from California who described herself as a breast cancer survivor stated, "Without health care benefits, I could not have gotten treatment." Jackie Mills, another striker, described the fear she has of what will happen to her young children if she loses her health care coverage. "What if they become sick or have an accident?"
These were just two of the real voices in today's battle between "David" and "Goliath."
"David" is the 70,000 grocery workers of Southern California and the 4,000 in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky who are risking everything for justice. "Goliath" is the trillion-dollar grocery industry represented by Safeway and Kroger that has reported record profits and boasted how they used a system of part-time workers to make themselves wealthier while proposing that workers pay as much as $95 a week for health care benefits.
The battle is about the right to health care.
It is also about the race to the bottom: the pauperization of working people and entire communities. The number of people without health insurance has increased in the last year by 2.4 million. This is the largest increase in a decade. The total of uninsured people in the United States is now 43.6 million.
If the giant grocery and retail businesses are allowed to win this fight, the number of people without any kind of health insurance will grow larger. Other employers will view this as a precedent to cut benefits. Hospital systems will feel the strain as those with no insurance are forced to rely on emergency room visits. The health of our communities is in jeopardy.
While the Bush administration and the Pentagon are spending $87 billion to continue the occupation of Iraq and wage war-cuts to local and state programs in Medical Assistance have exacerbated the crisis. Despite the giveaways to huge contractors like Halliburton and the conquest of the Iraq oil fields, unemployment for workers has increased. The divide between rich and poor is increasing.
As health care providers and advocates; as religious, civil rights, student, and community leaders; as union workers and non-union we are lending our voices to support the striking UFCW workers. This is a first step.
Don't Shop at Safeway or Kroger's.
Donate to the community food & toy drive for strikers and their families. (Non-perishable food, canned goods and toys for all age children can be brought to the All Peoples Congress Hall, 426 E. 31st Street on any Thursday, from 7 P.M. to 9 P.M.
