in positions of authority on both the state and university level have made a habit of suggesting that any benefits given to university staff would have to be paid for by new tuition raises. Until recently this rhetoric seemed to be the dominant opinion in everything from state government press releases to the Diamondback student newspaper. This began to change this past winter with the founding of the group, Students And Workers Unite !
This movement began with a large meeting of about 25 students from the Maryland Action Collective and Peace Forum as well as 10-15 staff members from AFSCME College Park United. After staff spoke about their experiences on dealing with the administration and anwered questions, students presented staff with a statement of solidarity and invitations for a free ride to the Feb. 15th antiwar protest in New York City. Staff, for its part, announced plans for an on-campus march and AFSCME rally in Annapolis on Feb. 10th.
Though SAWU! has no concrete plans for the summer, they finished out the year strong. In addition to the May Day Students' Staff Appreciation Day on May 1st and subsequent march to President Mote's house, SAWU! also gave out nearly 1,000 satirical "Exploit Our Workers" fliers (including one for President Mote himself) to bring the truth about the campus labor situation to the Maryland Day celebration. The students and staff in SAWU! have also continued to support each other at rallies on campus and in Annapolis against layoffs, furloughs and tuition hikes. Students and staff plan to strengthen and grow the new alliance in the coming year, and judging by the number of supportive buttons, opinion columns and verbal statements on campus, that will be the easy part.
