own students led a successful hunger strike to ensure a living wage for their workers. Though most unionized workers at the University of Maryland earn a living wage, many housekeepers are below that level and have to have second jobs. Other dining services employees are getting as low as $8,000 a year with no health care or job security as contract workers. Could a living wage campaign be put in place at Maryland? How?

--- reply (apr. 28, 2005) --- How? With the commitment of a small group of students. They can then call upon allies off-campus (labor unions, labor councils). You should look at the resources at www.studentsagainstsweatshops.org/resources.php.

They have contacts with students at Georgetown, Harvard, Michigan State, the UC schools and others that have won huge campaigns -- for living wages, WRC affiliation, right to unionize and more -- against both public and private universities.

best of luck!
