* Table space can be reserved for any day starting from the beginning of the year in the Office of Campus Reservations. Recently there has been no trouble in squatting un-used tables in front of the union or brining our own table.
Staffing the table
- Make a schedule for the tabling day at the meeting that has phone numbers of each person and each time they will table. Put it on the wiki (umcp.org website). Then people who weren't at the meeting can still sign up for unfilled slots. And if someone flakes on their slot they can be called.
- Be prepared to open conversation or assertively pass out information depending on what the goal is. Ask a question to someone who seems like they might be interested like "What do you think about the war?" or if they are supportive "how can we stop this war?" etc.Don't yell at people who disagree with you. It isn't nice and it makes people not want to talk to you.
Materials for tabling
- Make sure to prepare ahead of time all literature and signs you will want for the table. Do this at the beginning of the year and slowly add to it. It is probably a good idea to have one person in charge of tabling materials (could be the same person who registers it or not) who then can solicit materials/help and make others accountable for keeping the table looking pretty.
Places to Table
- Tabling is traditionally done in front of the union, but bringing our own table to the spot by the turtle in front of Hornbake Library has also been successful. Larouch supporters can sometimes crowd out the spot, and they are a cult and most people know it. For this reason they may make your job more difficult, but there has not been a good strategy of dealing with this besides ignoring it (see: "Don't yell at people..."). Events where large parts of the student body come out like First Look Fair, Second Look Fair, and other campus events like Earth Day and Radical Rush Week are good places to table. Preparing a really good table for such First Look Fair can then put you in good position for the rest of the semester.
- Tabling has also been done in front of the North and South Campus Diners around dinner or lunch time.
