Founded in 1972, as a way to help area residents to improve the quality of their lives, through its activities over 100 people are able to supplement their income. During economic hardship, the members of this small community have come together to create the crafts that reflect the beauty of their homeland and to perpetuate the sense of community and self sufficiency that characterized their pioneer ancestors. They sell wallhangings.
The Human Bean Company sells tapestries weaved and embroidered by Xulu'm Chon, a women's co-op in Chiapas, Mexico. In addition to the money the co-op makes from the fair trade sales, the Human Bean Company donates an equivalent of 15% of their purchases (not to be confused with 15% of their profits, which would be a smaller amount) to the Zapatista's Comision Receptora.
