rks Adventure Challenge is an experiential education outdoor leadership program designed to teach and empower at-risk and/or disadvantaged youth with teamwork, responsibility, and leadership skills. Our purpose is to create a skilled volunteer base to lead, and empower teen leaders to lead, group trips into challenging and new environments. We work in partnership with several D.C. area community organizations and court referral programs to facilitate backpacking, camping, canoeing, ropes course and rock-climbing trips. By exposing youth to new environments, we hope to provide a positive learning experience that will foster emotional and mental growth.

Here are some descriptions of trips done in the past. Your group can choose to do a trip like one of these or we can work with you to create your ideal trip that may cater to different needs.
Earthworks will arrange a day during the week prior to the trip to come to your location and meet with participants. We will go over skills and equipment such as how to set up a tent and how to cook outdoors as well as safety issues and questions such as what to pack. (Earthworks will provide all necessary outdoor gear such as tents, food, and climbing gear, etc…) Participants meet Earthworks on the morning of the trip at the trailhead. They pack their backpacks and begin the two-mile hike on a section of the Appalachian Trail to the campsite/climbing area. Once on arrival, participants set up the campsite and eat lunch. Afterwards we review some climbing safety/skills and begin rock climbing until diner time. During dinner participants will learn how cook and clean up a backpackers meal. Games and activities and reflections can be done during or after dinner. The next morning we can choose to either climb some more and head out after lunch or to leave early and arrive at the cars at lunch, depending on time schedules of your group. (Moderately Strenuous)
A day of rock climbing at Great Falls National Park in Virginia. Participants meet Earthworks and preside with beginning activities. After a picnic lunch, the group can visit the view of the falls then move down the trail to the climbing location. Participants will be given in depth instruction on safety, equipment and skills.
A leisurely canoe trip around Patuxent River at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary. The group meets Earthworks at parking lot in the morning and moves to picnic grounds to play some games to get to know each other. Talk about safety and do some trust building activities. Canoes are unloaded and everyone sets off together to explore the waters, flora and fauna of one of the largest freshwater tidal wetlands on the east coast. A stop for lunch can be made or lunch can be eaten prior to launching canoes. After a few hours of canoeing, the group returns to picnic grounds for final activities and say goodbyes. *Canoe trips have also been run on the Anacostia River.
A hike on the exciting Billy Goat Trail in Maryland along the Patomac River. This hike is around 5 miles long but can be cut to 2 with a shortcut along the C & O Canal. Hikers experience spectacular views of the Great Falls area all along the trail as well as learn about some local history. Lunch can be eaten at the trailhead picnic area or on the trail at any given view area. The trail is very rocky which provides lots of opportunities to scramble around and explore.
