University of Maryland students with Students for Justice in Palestine have made the week of April 7-12 the Week of Awareness for Refugees of Palestine. With the help of the Baltimore chapter of SUSTAIN (Stop US Tax Aid to Israel Now), students constructed several wooden huts on the Hornbake mall of the College Park campus, surrounded by a large wall anchored to the ground with cement blocks.
Graffiti and informational posters covered these displays with statements in support of Palestinian liberation and facts about the recent history of Palestine, specifically focused on oppression at the hands of the Israeli military and Israeli settlers. On the wall was written "Israeli Apartheid Wall" in English and "Wall of Hate" in Arabic, to bring attention to the massive construction by the Israeli military of a wall to completely segregate Palestinian villages from Israeli settlements or towns, and sometimes even from other Palestinian villages and farmland. A sentence about the $10,000,000,000 aid package from the United States that will probably be given to Israel very soon was also sprayed onto the wall.
Information on various Israeli incursions into Palestinian land as well as the recently murdered ISM activist Rachel Corrie were also highly on display.
To make clear their solidarity with SJP and Palestinian refugees, the peace mobilization Women In Black decided to relocate their weekly vigil to the sidewalks above Hornbake mall. Women In Black stands against the occupation and terrorist attacks, in memory of both Israeli and Palestinian victims of violence, and for peaceful coexistence.
Sarah Braunstein, an activist and member of Women In Black, stressed that it is possible "to want peace and justice for Palestine and still respect the right for Israel to exist." She added, "I'm in awe of what SJP did on Hornbake, but I was nervous because their ?[displays are very one-sided.... I respect and understand that, but see nothing ?[productive in looking at only one perspective. I also see an anti-Israel connotation in SJP and, as part of the Jewish community, don't want that to be the message WIB sends."
She added that it was an important step for Women In Black to overcome these concerns and stand in solidarity so that even though the groups don't totally align ideologically, they can support each other's work for justice.
Some of the signs the group held read, "We wear black as a sign of mourning for all those who have needlessly died," "Human rights are universal," and "Pro-Israel, Pro-Palestine, Pro-People." Women In Black's message could be a little confusing and construed as seemingly illogical, since many people on every side believe that the existence of Israel means the end of Palestine and vice-versa.
Simon Fitzgerald, standing with Women In Black as a member of the Jewish community stated, "I disagree with the organizers of Women In Black on the idea that a two-state solution can work, because of the differences in power dynamics.... Nevertheless, it is important to stand in solidarity with oppressed people and to make a movement for liberation can be an exercise in cross-community cooperation. The details, which are undoubtedly important, can only be worked out if we are mutually invested in each other."
